Baby 101 (Preparation for Parenthood Classes)

The four-session Preparation for Childbirth classes (“Baby 101”) cover such topics as the signs and symptoms of true labor versus false labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, non-medical pain management options, pain medications, epidurals, Caesarean sections, packing the suitcase and selecting a pediatrician.

The fee for the prenatal classes is $35 if the baby is delivered at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center; $60 if the baby is not delivered at OSF Saint Anthony.  The Infant/Child CPR class is included in the fee but is offered on a different day and at a different time.  The breastfeeding classes are also included in Baby 101.  Registration, preferably in the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy, is required.

Baby Express

For those who are unable to attend four sessions, the one-day class “Baby Express” covers the material found in the four-session prenatal classes. The fees are $75 per couple. The Infant/Child CPR class is included in the fee but is offered on a different day and at a different time.

Repeat parents who wish to review breathing techniques, medications and labor are invited to register for the last portion of the class as a prenatal refresher.

Prenatal Refresher Class
Offered at the end of the Baby Express class. Fee: $25 per couple.

Sibling Class

To help children age three to 10 prepare for a new baby’s arrival and to reassure them that they are special, the Sibling Class is offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on various Saturdays throughout the year.

Siblings may be excited about the new baby too, but they are also apprehensive and uncertain.  The new baby might be fun, but he or she is also going to take attention away from the big brother or sister.

The prospective parents are asked to join their children as they learn how to diaper, hold and burp a baby.  The class also includes valuable suggestions for the parents on how to ease the child’s adjustment to a new baby.

The fee for the class is $5 per family.  Registration is required.

Infant and Toddler CPR classes
Offered from 7 to 9 p.m. one or two times a month. Included in the fees for the prenatal classes or $12.50 per person.  Registration is required.

Breastfeeding class

Expectant mothers who are planning to breastfeed their babies are encouraged to attend a free Breastfeeding Class.  Fathers are also welcome to attend.

Taught by a board-certified lactation consultant, the classes are held from 7 to 9 p.m. one Wednesday per month.
