What are the Neurosciences?

=Images= | NeurosicenceNeuroscience is the study of the functions and abnormalities of the nervous system. Neuroscience includes neurology and neurosurgery.

Neurology is the subspecialty of medicine that deals with the diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems, pertaining to the brain, cranial nerves and spinal cord. A neurologist is a physician trained in diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases and disorders of the nervous system.

Neurosurgery is useful in treating a wide variety of conditions from brain tumors to spine problems. A neurosurgeon is a physician trained in surgery of the nervous system. Neurosurgeons have comprehensive training and experience in using surgery to help patients overcome neurological disease and injury.

The physicians and other medical professionals affiliated with the Illinois Neurological Institute are committed to being leaders in their chosen field. The medical staff works as a team to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of the brain and spinal cord. We conduct innovative research and sponsor popular education programs to ensure other healthcare professionals have access to proven life preserving and life enhancing clinical interventions.

The Institute works with the hospital's Level I Trauma Center, Neurological/Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center, medical imaging department and Lifeline emergency helicopter and ambulance service to provide the most complete care in the region. By coordinating all of our resources we are better able to diagnose and treat patients with stroke, severe head injuries, epilepsy and other neurological conditions.

The OSF Illinois Neurological Institute has been designated the "Alzheimer's Disease Primary Provider Site" by Southern Illinois University Center for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders and the Illinois Department of Public Health. The OSF Illinois Neurological Institute offers a Memory Disorders Center that provides assessment, education and resources for patients with memory disorders and their families.  OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is the first hospital in Rockford to achieve this designation.

The INI also offers a Headache Clinic to help those who suffer from ongoing headaches.  In conjunction with an ENT physician (Ear, Nose and Throat), an OSF audiologist and outpatient rehabilitation services, the staff participates in the diagnosis and treatment services offered through the OSF Balance and Dizziness Center.
